The wins, the loses, the clothes, NAHS students go all out for this years MTV awards
By Kayln Reyer
With school back in session and the perks and joys of summer fading away, students have to find new entertainment for the cooler months to come. One of the most buzzed about events to bring in fall is the MTV Video Music Awards, premiering live on September 6. NAHS students got chatty with their projected winnings and must-sees for the show.
What makes you the best pop video?
With catchy tunes like We Are Young by Fun. and Boyfriend by Justin Bieber, the category for Best Pop Video is as competitive as ever, but NAHS students think they know who will be taking home the gold. Junior grader Marisa Tolbert suspects that a five-member British band will walk away with the title.
“Everyone seems to be into the hot group One Direction,” Tolbert said. “They’re in for a sure win.”
Tolbert is not the only one that predicts the win, even the boys of NAHS can’t deny that the new age boy band has the upper hand this year at the awards. Junior Nick Thomas agrees that One Direction has taken the girl population by storm.
“For the category of Best New Artist, I think it will be a close call between Fun. and One Direction,” Thomas said. “I am honestly hoping for Fun. to pull through and win with their song We Are Young, but One Direction is pretty popular with the girls, so I think so it will be a close one.”
Carpet full of trends
Music winners aren’t the only thing NAHS students think they have decoded; many are jittery about which fashion trends will make an appearance at this year’s show. Sophomore Destiny Cunningham suspects that glitz and glam is out and boho chic is in.
“I think that Indian-inspired clothes and boho will be big this year, along with floral and neon pants,” Cunningham said.
Fashion doesn’t stop at just the girls this year, Thomas suspects that recent trends in menswear will be shown by the gentlemen attending the awards.
“I would have to say more of the older looking jackets will be big this year, things like old varsity jackets and fitted jackets,” Thomas said. “Old trends are making a comeback.”
Fall items are the main focus for many of the students at NAHS, but not all agree that the celebrities will make a transition to warmer items so fast. Junior Destiney Tabollt is pushing for the glitz and glam to be at an all time high.
“Fashion trends I expect to see are short, fitted dresses with sequins,” Tabollt said. “That has been in this year and I expect to see guys in either suits or vest with skinny jeans.”
Live performances
This year is loaded with talented artists ranging anywhere from teen sensations like Justin Bieber, to country’s sweetheart Taylor Swift, and NAHS students are already pegging which performances they need to be sure to record. Although One Direction fans are massively hyped for their live performance, another young star’s fans are counting down until the show.
“I’m really excited to see Taylor Swift perform her new song We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” Cunningham said. “It’s so catchy and fun and currently my new favorite song.”
With nine categories and tons of talented artists, the MTV Awards are a must see. You can vote online for your favorite artist or band and tune in September 6 at 8pm.
