Donovan Wilson: The Distance Runner

A Freshman Story: Personal Sports Profile #8

This freshman is doing it all. Donovan Wilson been a member of the cross country and swim teams, and will soon to be running in track.

“I’ve been participating in track for three years,” Wilson said. “This will be my fourth.”

Since Wilson is a distance runner, the events that he runs correlate with the distance events he runs in track.

“I run the mile, 800, and 400,” Wilson said.

Wilson says his goal for track this year is to beat his time in the mile.

“I want to get below five minutes on the mile,” Wilson said.

Wilson compares cross country and track:

“Track has given me more explosiveness in being ready to actually sprint more often,” Wilson said.

As far as Wilson is concerned, he says track is an underappreciated sport.

“Yeah, not many people go out to watch track or anything,” Wilson said. “They mostly watch football and all of that, but running is the main base behind it.”

In order to expose the sport a little bit more, Wilson thinks that getting the word out about track is the way to do it.

“We could probably get more out and tell more people’s times, how well they’re doing, instead of kind of keeping it in quiet,” Wilson said.

Wilson is considering running track in college.

“I think I would run in college,” Wilson said. “At the same time, I think it would be hard with my studies, and all of that.”

Wilson’s advice for incoming freshman next year is:

“Just never say can’t,” Wilson said. “If you say can’t, then you won’t believe you could do it.”
