NJROTC Rifle Team members are buzzing after their big win in Anniston, Alabama on February 23.
The NAHS rifle team now has a championship under their belts after placing first over 600 teams across the country, representing NAHS with pride. A few of the cadets returned to NAHS with the utter satisfaction, knowing they are a part of a winning team. One cadet, sophomore Caleigh McLean, was a headliner from the competition and came back with a new perspective on hard work and what it means to win.
“”I felt so accomplished that all our hard work had paid off and I was very excited,” McLean said. “I felt like a champ!”
The NJOROTC team was covered in The New & Tribune and was called the “unnoticed team” but sophomore Caleb Hardin could argue that the number one team is anything but unnoticed.
“It has been a goal for a long time and we made history,” Hardin said. “We did something that the rifle team has never done in the past and we won the Navy National Championship! That’s only half the battle, we still have lots of practice and we all have a Service Championship soon and we’ll see who’s the best of the best.”
The NJROTC team are winning championships and making names for themselves in hopes that eventually they will no longer be “unnoticed” and instead be the stars of the show.

The NAHS rifle team has accomplished more this year than did past winning teams. I believe this is their 3rd straight State Championship, and their score this year set a State record. That is quite an accomplishment.
.
It would seem that someone should put up a rational argument for the reinstatement of the Rifle Club. The safety classes alone were worth the membership. Also, it is where the rifle team acquired a number of new members.
.
It would seem that an argument for the reinstatement of the Rifle Team to a Varsity Sport should also be made. After all, the Olympics consider shooting to be a sport! I still have my Varsity sweater.
.
I was looking on your website for the proper spelling of the name of an old NAHS alum, and I noticed the listing for ‘clubs’. The Rifle Club was, of course, missing, as I heard that it had been disbanded; so, I looked at the clubs that were listed. Six of them got my interest:
.
Dungeons & Dragons – Ms. Bronson
Heavy Metal Music Club – Mr. Bradley
Homer J. Simpson Appreciation Society – Ms. Ponder
Magic: The Gathering Club – Mr. Flispart
Underground Book Club – Ms. Koopman
Yarn Club (Stitch and Enrich) – Ms. Fry
.
Except for the ‘Yarn Club’ the other five would have aroused the ire of the parents of my generation, not that I care. Hey, back in the day ‘Mad Magazine’ would have been considered fodder only for the ‘Underground Book Club’.
.
“Come on”, Homer Simpson? You’re pulling my leg…right? Homer Simpson, and NO Rifle Club? Get a grip!
.
What are your thoughts…for real?
