The connotation that sparks in a student’s brain about the cafeteria is usually portrayed in movies and TV as gross food and weird people serving it. But what if I told you that the cafeteria at NAHS was a bit different? I got the inside look on what it’s like to work in the cafeteria department here, and it’s quite a surprise. Two of the three men that work in the cafeteria here, Bill Ballard and Shawn Robinson, told me all about their little family of co-workers.

“To me, this is an example of people who, despite their struggles, come in and work hard and put that stuff behind them,” Robinson, who has been here for 5 years, said.
Although the men and women in the cafeteria staff come from different backgrounds and homes, they all are a part of family here at NAHS. The two men explained that the staff does pitch-in dinners every holiday and they all eat together.
“When I got here, I was amazed at how hard these ladies work. I mean, Bill and I are two of three guys here and there are 18 ladies here,” Robinson said. “They work hard and they don’t complain for the most part.”
Not only does the cafeteria staff strive to have positive attitudes and family-like environments in their workplace, but they also try to make the cafeteria a good place for the students. The men said there is a lot of preparation involved before lunch is served. Although the workload is heavy, they both love it.
“I don’t have a least favorite thing, I love it here,” Ballard said.
Providing a positive attitude while working is one of the highlights of the NAHS cafeteria staff. They are interactive with the students and really enjoy where they are.
“Bill and I make a point to smile and be friendly with these kids. That may be the only smile they see all day,” Robinson said.
