Childish Gambino // Awaken My Love

Tyler Boren’s Favorite Song: “Baby Boy”

Matthew Fitzsimmons’ Favorite Song : “Stand Tall”

Awaken My Love is Childish Gambino’s fourth album and was his return to the music world after pursuing his successful career in writing and acting. This album was surrounded in secrecy up until the final days until its release. On December 2, 2016 his fans were shocked to hear a soulful, funky vibe rather than the quick-witted, clever wordplay with rhymes that come along with the usual Gambino project.

Our review on this album is favorable. Although different and not the usual Childish Gambino we have come to know and love, it is still a very quality album with fast songs, slow songs, and all in between. If you are a fan of Childish Gambino then you should give this album a try, and it may take some time, but it will also give you a new taste in music you may have never tried before. Great stand out songs are “Redbone” with it’s groovy melody and Prince inspired tones, as well as “Zombies” and it’s hypnotizing background vocals and impactful lyrics. Although songs such as “California” showcase a different Gambino sound, “Stand Tall”, the closing song, displays a more mature vocal performance that perhaps maybe the best example of singing Childish Gambino has ever performed.

Although the album is extremely different than what fans were expecting, it was still good. The groovy, R&B sound mixed with funk is something that Childish Gambino has done well with this album. We give this album 4 out of 5. This album is available on iTunes, Spotify, and Soundcloud.
