In her tenth year as a Bulldog and her first year as an administrator, Dean of Students Amy Miller is ready for another challenge.
“I am excited to get to know my new students even better and see them through their four years to watch them walk the graduation stage at NAHS,” Miller said.
Miller has left a significant impact on the NAHS theatre arts program with her greatest accomplishments being their two main stage shows at the International Thespian Festival in 2020 and 2022.
Miller says theatre was a big part of her life when she was a kid and being the Theatre Director allowed her to bring that passion into her job.
“I did my first show when I was 8 or 9 years old and had always taken dance class when I was little. It just stuck and I continued to do shows throughout my high school, college, and professional career,” Miller said.
Although Miller has made a switch from Theatre Director to Administrator she continues to incorporate theatre arts in her life. She helps out with other theatres around the community where she helps to direct and choreograph plays and musicals.
“The great thing is that I can still be a small part of NA theatre, hopefully by assisting as needed here and there,” Miller said.
As Dean of students Miller has a whole new group of kids to work with. Working with a new group can be exciting but one of the drawbacks of switching her job is that she no longer gets to work with her theatre kids daily.
“The greatest thing is that I am still in the building with them every day and can go visit and help out when I can,” Miller said.
As the theatre director she taught a full day of classes and she managed the shows that we did. As Dean of Students Miller spends a lot of her time meeting with her cohort of students additionally she has to work on school systems and protocols, meet with teachers, and work on ways to improve student learning.
Miller says her main expectation going into the school year as Dean of Students was that it would be a fast- paced job where she got to help students make and accomplish their goals.
“I love that I am moving all the time and meeting new students. I also get to work with a lot of teachers and work on school initiatives,” Miller said.
Miller works mainly with the freshman class this year. She helps them transition to high school from whatever middle school they came from. Miller provides support for them by having conversations with them about things that are hard when coming to a new school.
“Working with freshman is fun, fast-paced, and humbling. Everyone has room to grow and achieve their goals and it’s my job to help facilitate that any way I can,” Miller said.
Another aspect of Miller’s job is disciplining kids and she says that can be tough.
“Each day is a new day and everyone has the opportunity to come back the next day and try again,” Miller said.
Outside of the school day some things that keep her positive are her daughter Maggie Rose, her husband Mac, walking, hiking, playing tennis, and Disney World.
“Maggie is my future NA Theatre Thespian,” Miller said.
