Fall is more than cool temperatures and orange, falling leaves.
The official season of Autumn ranges from September 23 to December 21 this year, according to Met Office. There are endless amounts of fall things to engage in that everyone can get involved with carving pumpkins, hay rides, haunted houses, seasonal trends, pumpkin pie, and sweater season. From hibernation to holidays, anyone can look forward to fall.
“The fashion, the temperature outside is so nice,” senior Amelia Sekula said. “Like you just want to be outside all the time.”
Sekula has had some memorable times in the fall. With the cozy, comfortable season, she’s looking forward to many things that fall entails such as the leaves, coffee books, the cool weather, and holidays.
With Autumn in full swing, more activities follow. The average temperature in fall in Louisville in 2019 was roughly 61 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Fall has cooler temperatures, and a lot more activities become available. Falling leaves lead to jumping in leaf piles, warmer colors like orange-brown, red, and yellow, and perfect weather for an evening walk can be missed during the rest of the year.
“[Activities I do are] carving pumpkins, just hanging out with my friends, watching scary movies and eating candies, or like going trick or treating as like a group or going to a party,” sophomore Max Cummins said.
Cummins spends most of her fall hanging out with friends. She says her fondest memory of fall was going trick-or-treating with her friends.
Between the haunted houses and hay rides one of the more notable things in autumn is the holidays. In the fall there are numerous holidays: Halloween, Day of the Dead, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Mawlid, Diwali, and Hannaka. An estimated 148 million Americans celebrate Halloween each year, according to Gitnux.
“I go trick or treating and even if I don’t get to go trick or treating, I do still dress up,” sophomore Baylee Hartley said.”I like to eat candy. Even if I don’t go trick or treating, I’ll go buy it. I’ll [also] watch horror movies.”
Fall is close for Hartley. Hartley associates fall with happiness and has had a lot of important dates with fall that are held close.
Halloween can be drastically different between people. Some people go all out in costumes and trick-or-treating and some people prefer to just hang out with friends and watch horror movies.
“I just kind of hand out candy or maybe we go to like a party with a few friends,” Sekula said. “But, I just like handing out candy to the neighborhood. It’s fun.”
But the season of fall is more than just cool weather and holidays, there’s also fall trends. Pumpkin-flavored foods shoot into season along with bulkier clothes.
“I definitely try to participate in clothing trends,” Cummins said. “I’m trying to get more clothes but like there’s a thing that I saw where it was like, watch a Halloween movie like every day and it was like certain movies and I thought that was really cool.”
Clothing and daily activities in months of fall are common trends. But, some trends aren’t as common as these.
“Baking, I feel like it’s a fall trend,” Sekula said. “And then the decor definitely. It’s like just the fall colors, too. Usually, I bake these like pumpkin chocolate chip cookies or like the bread too. Or cinnamon rolls they’re pumpkin. They’re really good and it’s perfect.”
Fall is a memorable season for an endless list of reasons. Whether you’re out enjoying the weather or huddled indoors with a warm blanket, fall will always be enjoyed.
