When books are reimagined into real people and scenes, the people on the screen may not fully reflect what readers imagined in the pages. Due to this, audiences may have a harder time enjoying the media presented to them.
With everyone’s minds being different and interpreting the character’s looks as well as their personality, casting can become tough when remaking books into movies. Personally, books are a freedom and give a person something to look forward to when they pick them up.
Books can take anywhere from a single day to months and months of time and dedication to finish, whereas a movie takes two and a half hours of your life and then you move on. As a book reader myself, I feel like picking up a book and reading, even if it is for ten minutes a day, it is a dedication to that book and to get to that finish line.
Another huge problem we see when producers may make by taking out certain scenes and or lines that made the book special. By altering the book’s original storyline, the movie just isn’t as great as the book.
Like most book readers, we always have that initial fear when the producers announce our favorite books being recreated into films because we don’t want them to mess up the plot of the book as well as the characters we imagined.
But looking at it from a director’s point of view, I can understand how it can be challenging to select a ‘perfect’ actor to fit the shoes of a fictional character.
Currently, we are beginning to see more and more books being turned into movies and it is definitely affecting both readers and movie watchers. In 2023, we saw an explosion of book readers spring to life because of ‘Booktok’ and it made authors and book titles grow significantly.
Personally, I think that there is no real harm in making books into movies, however; I believe that books that are made into movies can sometimes lead to them becoming less magical as the books were. Getting to finish a book or book series is an accomplishment and is a way to keep pushing yourself, which is why I love books so much. Sometimes, however, that feeling of accomplishment gets taken away when they rewrite and recast the book on the big screen.
