At the beginning of every new year the whole world has goals. To achieve those goals some may write them down, schedule something, or even kick something out of their life that won’t help them benefit towards that goal. But, a growingly popular way people are trying to reach their goals is making vision boards.
One might be curious on what a vision board is. This board is a collage of pictures that are taped or glued to a poster, paper, or canvas, that’s hung in a room you’re in daily, representing the goals that you have in your life for the year. It can be pictures of yourself, other people, pictures you find on the internet, all the way to inspirational quotes that relate to you.
Vision Boards are a great way for people to know what they’re striving for. It’s a way to set, see your goals, and remember them. A Forbes study showed that 76% of entrepreneurs voiced that when starting their business, what they were doing and what had happened matched up with their board. 82% of small businesses reported that they’ve achieved more than half of their work goals since they started.
“The brain has the ability to rewire itself in response to experiences and thoughts. Visualization can stimulate neural pathways associated with the desired outcome, making it more likely to manifest in reality,” according to DEDRA WEIGMAN CO. When we focus our brains on something such as decorating, coloring, or designing something to our aesthetic and that is to our liking, the desire and want to accomplish such goals increase.
Sophomore Laykan Clark made her vision board via Pinterest.
“It makes me think. It makes me focus on something other than the bad stuff in my life,” Clark said.
It can also be a calming way to reignite someone’s creativity. It’s a relaxing and calming way to forget about every stressful thing in one’s life by sitting down and coloring, designing, and decorating a vision board. The overall vibe is an important part of it too. It’s important for the remembrance aspect of it. If you see something that you’re proud of, that’s appealing to or catches your eye, then it’s more likely to stick in your brain.
When talking about the aesthetic of her board Freshman Meghan Haulter said, “Like a clean girl aesthetic, and cuteness, demureness.”
Clark says it’s also “very clean girl, very put together.”
Some other science behind these boards is that by putting these goals on the board, the visualization of them can enhance your memory of such goals. “Visualization can enhance memory by reinforcing neural pathways associated with the imagined experience. This can help you remember details, strategies, and action plans related to your goals,” according to DEDRA WEIGMAN CO. As you’re thinking and doing your everyday tasks, it can be easy for the pictures to pop up in your head and for you to work on them.
Some may have the hesitation of doing vision boards because of the “myth” behind them. While there are people who think it’s a silly concept where none of the wishes actually come true, there are other people who disagree and truly believe that it’s helped them.
“I think they work, just so you can plan out your whole year,” Haulter said.
According to HowStuffWorks, “It’s based on the universal Law of Attraction, which basically says that our minds are powerful tools that can turn thoughts and desires into reality.” This is another reason to prove our minds are the most important thing that can help us make good things we wish for happen.
As studies show, vision boards are a great way to uplift and calm your spirits. It’s a way to relax while decorating, planning, and creating the overall vibe, aesthetic, and luck of these boards. With the visualization of the pictures, it’s easy a good reminder of the goals that are on it so, you can strive and focus on your goals each and every day. So whether you believe in it or not, everyone should try making a vision board at least once in their lifetime.
