Awards season has come and gone. With 23 total categories, there can only be a few Oscar winners. From the red carpet to the ceremony, 19.7 million different people had their opinions. Whether it concerned someone’s dress or suit, to who deserved the awards. Every little movement and expression was picked apart. Having an award show as such, with many popular faces in the crowd, choosing a winner was taking a toll on the film industry. However the backlash came to be far worse. From Timothée Chalamet to Demi Moore, the choices varied.
When Adrien Brody won the ‘Best Actor’ Award, many fans, myself included, felt a surge of anger. Adrien Brody played an holocaust survivor in The Brutalist was indeed a good performance, however it was one without dedication. While Brody beat out actor Timothée Chalamet, after Chalamet spent five years mastering the same way Bob Dylan played his guitar, capturing his unique accent, learning his body language, learning his stage presence, studying his childhood and presence outside of the press.
After spending five years of pure dedication in order to prepare for this one role whilst still filming other movies, Chalamet lost simply to AI and little preparation. When this happened the media became outraged, while some agreed with the winner a large number felt as if Chalamet was robbed. However this is not the only time similar opinions would be shared.
A noticeable divide was present between who deserved to win Best Lead Actress’ – Demi Moore for her role in The Substance or Mikey Madison for her role in Anora. Though Madison won, some believe Demi Moore deserved the award because she is a more seasoned actress, they also believe that Madison winning was the same as the plot for Moore’s movie The Substance. While on the other side of the spectrum the fans believe Madison deserved the win for her amazingly performed role in Anora. While Madison is considerably younger, she also put a great amount of work into her role. She did this in many ways, for example she learned new accents, learned how to pole dance, and did her research with real sex workers.
Even though Madison is less seasoned she still completely deserved the win for her pure dedication. Stepping outside your comfort zone is no easy feat neither is learning a way of life you are completely opposite of. While Moore has had very entertaining movies she simply did not blow fan bases away as much as Madison apparently did. Whether it was Chalamet deserving the win, or Madison deserving her well-earned win, there will always be people who disagree. However, there is no denying the pure talent that graced our screen in films such as A Complete Unknown or Anora. Each minute the team who made the movie and the leading actors/actress’ made it all the more capturing of attention.
There were quite harsh critiques towards the film industry, which might influence them to take the audience’s opinion into more consideration. However it most likely will not happen as the film industry has never taken the fans’ opinions into consideration. This is given considering the past years there is always an up roar about almost all the winners or even nominations. This issue can be solved if the public simply voted on the winner, because the public is the only reason they can continue with their award shows, right?
