While scrolling on your phone, you come across something that catches your eye. Your favorite Disney movie from childhood is getting a live-action remake! You can’t help but wonder if it’ll be just as good as the original.

Following the release of a live-action Snow White, the media has been full of critiques — few good, most bad. This discourse has raised the question: Are Disney live-action films always ‘bad’?

When you compare earnings from the Snow White live-action to other remakes, there’s a significant difference. For example, the Cinderella movie from 2015 made $542.3 million worldwide, while Snow White made $143.1 million, according to Deadline.

Why was this new movie so disliked? Looking back at other disliked live-action movies, there seems to be a pattern in reviews. Many review websites like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes are full of comments that critique the lack of uniqueness that live-action films have. While some like that these movies keep many of their original elements.

Something that seems to bother many viewers is when there is an attempt to make a change to the original plot, but it isn’t executed the right way. A plot change that viewers liked was in the 2016 film The Jungle Book. Many liked the way the movie took a slightly different path than the original and even fixed some controversial points.

A big thing that people could not ignore while watching Snow White was the wardrobe. Fans of the original movie did not like how the dress seemed to be such a letdown compared to other Disney princesses’ dresses. What stood out to people about the dress was the belief that its colors just didn’t bring any charm to the movie; rather, it took away from it.

Though that opinion does not spread across all live actions. For example, the 2019 film Aladdin received praise for Jasmine’s dress. Many believe that it was a nice retouch of the original, which was historically and culturally inaccurate, while adding a slightly modern feel to it, according to Fashionista. 

One thing that people point out is that live-action movies are not always meant to be straight remakes. Meaning that directors can take the liberty of changing things up. That might mean making a plot change or having an open mind to retouches.
