The age of information has made societal movements extremely easy and ubiquitous; it’s almost impossible to walk through a public place without hearing someone’s opinion on gender equality. Twitter is an epicenter for feminism and everyone has something to say.
Recent generations seem to have an astounding ability of stating their opinions, (I type this while regurgitating my own on a weekly basis, the irony is charming, wouldn’t you say?) some of those opinions being full of blatant disrespect and low-blows purely for the pleasure of mockery. Making fun of major developments that will shape our very own future won’t make anyone cooler. Ridiculing women and men for labeling themselves as Feminists is an arbitrary form of bullying. The freedom to support what one wants is important, and views should not be forced upon anyone, but incessantly poking fun at crucial (not to mention life-changingly popular) movements isn’t okay either.
Whether it be publicizing hate for a school’s newspaper article in front of a whole class (true story), or picking fights with a person regarding social beliefs, the only thing being achieved is the expanse of negativity. This farce is completely unwarranted, and a major waste of time.
So, don’t be one of those kids in the back of the classroom calling feminists stupid just because it’s what everyone else is doing.
