On October 28 the NAHS yearbook and newspaper staffs traveled to Indiana University Southeast to attend the annual Southeastern Indiana Student Press Association convention promoting scholastic journalism. Students had the opportunity to attend various workshops on anything from advanced photography to editorial cartoons. At the end of the day, an awards ceremony was held to honor both yearbook and newspaper publications and staffers for a job well done.
Yearbook Awards
The Vista staff earned a lot of recognition for their commitment to yearbook excellence. They were awarded 3rd place for Yearbook of the Year and 3rd place for Best Design. The convention also gave credit to a yearbook’s coverage in specific sections; the Vista scored 2nd place for Best Sports Coverage, 3rd place for Best Academic Coverage and 3rd place for Best Student Life Coverage. In other awards, the Vista earned 1st place in Best Advertising Section.
“Even though we placed third, I was pleased because we were up against some tough competition,” junior yearbook staffer Grace Kaforski said.
Newspaper Accolades
The Blotter staff also received many honors for their hard work and dedication. They earned 3rd place for Newspaper of the Year, 2nd place for Best Overall Design, and 3rd place for Best Front Page Design. The Blotter also scored well in individual recognition. 1st place for Best News Editorial Graphic was awarded to senior editor-in-chief Kathryn Vance, 2nd place for Best Review was earned by senior web editor Riley Zipper and 3rd place for Best Sports Story was awarded to senior sports editor Nick Blackwell. NAHS graduate Kelsey Graeter won 1st place for Best Photo Essay as well.
“Overall we did a really good job,” Vance said. “The awards showed how our hard work paid off from the past year.”
