Same Desk, Different Stories
Mrs. Korte’s Class
Mrs. Korte’s art class is a place of diverse learning where creative juices flow. Since art class is an elective at NAHS, it is easy to assume that most of Mrs. Korte’s students share the same hobbies and goals since they did indeed choose to be in the class. If one particular desk in the room was chosen and every student who sat there throughout the day was observed, they all might do similar things; an onlooker may see them paint, sketch, or even sculpt. However ,what differentiates these specific students outside of the classroom? What unique dreams do they each have for themselves? Sure, all of the students sit in the exact same desk, but their individual stories are very different.

What interests you about the arts? “I am interested in the arts because it is a way to express yourself in any way you want. Music, painting, dance, theater, what have you. In my opinion it is a way to escape any situation you find yourself in.”
What are you involved in inside and out of school? “I am not involved in much because I work a lot of the time, but when I do have free time I stay after school and paint. I have helped paint windows for the Harvest Homecoming twice. I’m the president of The National Art Honor Society so I have helped do concessions for games to raise money for us. Last year I helped the seniors paint the senior mural for the church across the street.”
What are three words your friends would use to describe you? “Creative, unique and bold.”
What are your plans after high school? “I plan on attending college to be a commercial art major to become a graphic designer. I also plan on getting my tattooing apprenticeship and working from there. So, both jobs I want to do revolve around art. I want to be able to spend the rest of my life making money off something I know I do well and I enjoy.”

What interests you about the arts? “Art is the way I express myself and how I feel. I am pretty reserved about emotions and stuff so it is a good way for me to vent and create something pretty at the same time. Also art has a very cool community built around it full of interesting and inspiring people.”
What are you involved in inside and out of school? “In school I am in the National Art Honor Society and out I am a Peer Educator in the Teen Reach program at Planned Parenthood of Kentucky. We do presentations about safe sex and healthy relationships for high schools and churches around Louisville.”
What are three words your friends would use to describe you? “Three words would probably be weird, funny, and (incredibly) fashionable.”
What are your plans after high school? “After high school I will hopefully be going to a good arts college. I have been looking at the Memphis College of Art. The careers I am most interested in are becoming a graphic novelist and video game art designer.”

What interests you about the arts? “What interests me about the arts is that I can put feelings and emotions into my pieces, even if not everyone quite understands what I am trying to get across. Plus, I love showing my creative and artistic side.”
