There are several different genres of movies: comedy, horror, romance, drama, action and many more. Some are original, while others are cliché and follow an extremely predictable plotline. A typical scenario that has been overdone time and time again is the classic ‘damsel in distress’ and the ‘night in shining armor’ that rescues her. In our younger years we were introduced to Disney movies with the handsome prince that rescues the princess, leading up to the overrated Twilight movies – no offense to Twilight, I loved the books. However, a film does not require an overused theme in order to be successful.
The proof of this lies with the popular three part series, The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is about a headstrong teenage girl, Katniss Everdeen, who saves her sister and as a result must fight for her life. In this film, Jennifer Lawrence, a Kentucky native playing Katniss, does a fantastic job in portraying a very scared, but courageous character. All of the actors, including her co-stars, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, playing Gale Hawthorne and Peeta Mellark, do a very convincing job in playing their roles. In fact, the emotions felt so real that at times you felt apart of the film.
This is not any typical romance novel turned into a movie. This film is very powerful and exciting. While it may have its sad moments, it mainly consists of action with intense fighting scenes. However, I do not recommend The Hunger Games for small children, for some parts even had adults jumping in the theater.
In some cases, when a novel is turned into a movie, the story is difficult to follow unless you have read the books. However, this is not the case withThe Hunger Games. If you have yet to see this action packed thriller, I highly recommend that you go see it. Caution: many violent scenes occur throughout the entire movie. If this thought makes you uneasy, go see it anyway. As the film’s district twelve escort Effie Trinket says, “May the odds be EVER in your favor.”
