Whether you’re focused on spending time with your loved one or hanging out with your friends, Valentine’s Day can be a fun holiday for everyone, even if your single.

When the word Valentine pops into your head, most people think of flowers, chocolates, or romantic movies. These are all pretty cliche, and after celebrating valentines day for 17 years in a row now, it’s all became kind of a blur. On Valentine’s Day every year, there are at least 36 million heart shape boxes of chocolates sold, according to softschools.com. This year is different though, because people at our school are going on the not so traditional route to celebrate this lovely holiday.

“Me and my group of my friends are hanging out and having a movie marathon over at my house,” said senior Kaleb Scalf. “Most of us are single anyways, so it’s not like anyone’s missing out on anything.”

Instead of getting down about not having a special someone to the day with, just hang out with your friends who also don’t have a date. Some fun things to do are: make valentines day cookies, watch romantic comedies, go get your nails done, or go grab bite to eat.  This year at White Castle, they have a special going on where you can call and reserve a table for you and your date, and you get table side service for an hour. This is a cheap and hilarious way to celebrate.

“Since my dad and my mom aren’t together anymore, me and my dad have a tradition where he picks me up right after school and gives me little presents, then we go out to eat,” senior Katie Anastasio said. “It’s not romantic or anything obviously, but it’s nice to have someone to hang out with on Valentine’s Day.”

Single parents deserve some love on Valentine’s Day too. This day is not just about being romantic, it’s about being with the ones you love.  There are 13.6 million single parents living in the U.S, according to census.gov. A good way to show your parents appreciation is making a homemade Valentines day card. It’s simple and easy to do, and you can easily get your hands on construction papers and markers.

“This year we’re all going to a tribute to Sublime concert,” senior Halee Pendleton said. “I usually don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, but this year I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Sublime is at The Mercury Ballroom in Louisville; tickets are $20. Of you’re looking for a fun, inexpensive thing to do with your friends, this is it.
