Over the past few weeks, singer and song-writer, Melissa Jefferson (commonly known as Lizzo), has been in headlines recently due to her choice of clothing and “body-positive” acts accused of being disguised as clout chasing. Is this a simple case of a plus-size artist looking to shine light on others with her similar body type or did Lizzo take it too far? 

On December 8th, 2019, the 31-year-old up and coming singer attended the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Minnesota Timberwolves and generated lots of media attention due to her outfit choice. In description, it was a thong. That is what sparked the conversation, is Lizzo just showing her curves or did she bust this look? 

Lots of those commenting on Twitter and Instagram fought to say Lizzo took her outfit too far, knowing that families in the arena and at home were watching and that her outfit choice was not appropriate for such a public and friendly setting.  

Others argued that Lizzo’s idea to show a little “something” was no more than Rhianna (which in 2014, made an appearance twice wearing quite sheer tops). This argument sparked the “is it because she’s considered “fat?” conversation.

Being apart of the public at home, tweeting from our phones, it is easy to judge and easy to criticize celebrities. However, it is important to remember that their every move is blasted across social media platforms and made available to the world. If Lizzo stands for body-positivity, covering it up from head-to-toe is not the way to advertise that, but offending those of more modest households is also not the way to advertise that. 

As a whole, this incident didn’t hurt Kay much, with her singing one of the most popular songs of 2019. Celebrities who support body-positivity become such a universal symbol for women to stand-up and love who they are! What do you think?
