Unruh is excited about club participation

Clubs have begun and activities are underway. Whether the club is for health or recreation, students at NAHS are excited to finally get into some fun.
“I joined the heavy metal club because I wanted one that had something pertaining to music because music is my life,” sophomore Rachel Bohn said. “I really like metal music, and I had friends who joined the club.”
35 clubs were offered this year to the 2,000 students. Club memberships range from as small as 10 to as large as 165. Clubs vary from Dungeons and Dragons, sponsored by Ms. Bronson to Walking Club sponsored by Ms. Corrie and Mr. Peterson.
“Having 50 plus students can be challenging,” German teacher Eva Seymour said. “However, if the club has a routine and clear directives 50+ students shouldn’t be a problem. Also if the club is physically active, competitive and enthusiastic large numbers could be a benefit.”
Throughout the school year, there are 24 activity periods nine of which are clubs days, giving us one 50-minute session per month. Some don’t feel that this is enough time.
“I do not feel that a 50 minute session once a month is a sufficient amount of time, but diligent teachers make the most out of any given amount of time,” Seymour said.
Some clubs would understandably need extra time, but according to Athletic Director Mr. Don Unruh, club sponsors can request to meet after school hours. However, they do not meet anytime during the school day other than club day.
“The activity periods take time directly from classroom instruction,” Unruh said.
Unruh has high hopes for this year in relation to clubs. Hopefully past year sign ups won’t be a prediction for the 2012-2013 school year. In 2010-2011, only 939 of the 2,030 students joined a club. In 2011-2012, numbers improved, but not by much. Out of the 2014 students enrolled, 1,083 were in a club.
