Music, as we all know, is one of the most prominent forms of media that is consumed and there’s a reason for that. Music brings people together, it creates a connection between artist and song that isn’t easily replicated.
There are so many kinds of music and according to a poll of NAHS students, the majority of the freshmen, sophomore, and senior classes listen to pop and the juniors listen to mostly rap.
There’s likely a very good reason that people connect to specific kinds of music more than others, and for sophomore Cameron Moss indie music is the top choice.
“I mainly listen to indie-type music. It appeals to me more so than other types of music because it usually fits the kind of vibe and setting I’m in. For example, sitting on the bus, working on homework, cleaning my room, and many others,” Moss said.
More often than not music can really affect your mood and how you feel throughout the day, if you’re listening to Happy by Pharrell Williams you’ll probably feel you’re enjoying your day more than if you’re listening to nothing but Mazzy Star.
“If I am having a bad day, I would usually listen to songs that would reflect that. It is, in a way, therapeutic. Listening to someone sing about how I am feeling and what I may be going through
helps with knowing my feelings are valid. If I am having a good day, I would listen to some more upbeat music, and so on,” Moss said.
Music plays a huge role in a lot of people’s lives, and for freshman Tessa Julian it plays a huge role as she listens to it as background noise while doing something, it’s also used as an emotional outlet. Sophomore Rachel Stevens also talked about music’s influence in her everyday life.
“Music plays a huge part in my life. It helps if I don’t wanna think about a situation or someone who upset me. It’s easy not to think when you listen to music with both headphones in. I am in my own little world when that happens,” Stevens said.
Music taste can change drastically throughout the course of our lives and it’s because people change, and along with that what they like changes too.
“My taste in music has definitely changed. A few years ago, when I started listening to music a lot, I would stick to the same songs and artists. Now, I have hundreds of artists and songs that I listen to each day that I enjoy. I am constantly adding more and more songs to my playlists, so even now, my music taste is a little bit different than it was last month,” Moss said.
Certain artists tend to stand

out to certain people more than they would for others and more than other artists do for that person, Stevens has really been loving Zach Top recently while Julian instead has been listening to Mitski.
“My favorite artist is Mitski. She stands out because of her unique instrumentals, her soothing voice, and her meaningful and emotional lyrics. I can’t think of one song she made that I dislike. I discovered her a few years ago from hearing Nobody and Washing Machine Heart on YouTube and TikTok, and decided to listen to a few of her other songs,” Julian said.
Some people prefer to listen to whole albums at once, if a new single is dropped they’ll stream it consistently or we make playlists full of all kinds of music that we like, Julian enjoys listening to playlists because there are certain songs that fit the vibe of what she’s wanting to listen to.
“I mainly listen to the playlists I make and my ‘liked’ songs because since I listen to music so often, I don’t like repeating the same songs over and over. So, if I make my own playlist, then I can add as many songs as I want to it,” Moss said.
Multiple people who were interviewed stated that they find new music usually through people recommending it to them, this is a prime example of how music brings people together, even in small ways.
“Music definitely brings people together. Music is a universal language. It makes people feel things that simple words cannot. Someone from across the world can speak to you with just a few notes. Just think what a whole song could do,” Moss said.
