On October 1, the government officially shut down when neither party could compromise on federal funding. With Republicans having the majority in the House, Senate, and White House, you’d think they would take some blame…but they haven’t.
With the approach of the third week of the shutdown, every government worker’s job is in danger, while the President and his media team put up signs everywhere blaming the Democrats for it.
It’s honestly ridiculous how the people in our legislature are acting; it’s embarrassing on both sides. It’s wrong to put up on government websites and professional phone calls that it is solely the Democrats’ fault. The Democrats, while standing for what is right, are costing people their livelihoods. But I think our current president said it best back in 2011, before he was elected. A government shutdown falls back on the president and makes them look bad.
The Senate, which is considered the upper house, aka the smarter one, failed to “advance” a House-passed funding bill for the twelfth time on October 22. Yeah, we’re at double digits, let that sink in. The current shutdown has officially reached the point that it has made history as well, with it being the second-longest in history. The only one beating it is the shutdown that lasted 35 days in 2018, which, unsurprisingly, was during Trump’s first term.
The whole world’s eyes have been on the US since Trump was elected for the second time, but the government shutdown has just turned our once great country into a joke. I mean, the fact that our government is taking away rights that were only earned about 50 years ago is baffling. We’re going back in time, fast, and this government shutdown is just allowing the people in power to work in the shadows. And those who aren’t paying close attention to politics right now are gonna be in for a rude awakening real quick. It’s time for the Democrats and Republicans to put aside their differences and do what is best for the American people.
